Service Description
This 3 day course is an opportunity to try out several printmaking processes across 3 days! Taught by two of our tutors, Laura Buckland and Craig Frost, you'll be introduced to 6 key processes over the morning and afternoon sessions. Our summer school is great for complete beginners looking to try something new, for students (16+) looking to boost their portfolio or for teachers looking to refresh their skills! On Monday, Craig will firstly introduce the studio and then will cover how to explore mono printing in the morning (10am-12.30pm). There'll be an hour for lunch and then you'll learn how to do drypoint printing in the afternoon (1.30 - 4pm). Mono printing involves working directly with ink that has been rolled out onto a surface and can be played with using drawn marks or by impressing found objects. Drypoint involves scratching and creating various marks into the surface of a plastic or metal plate, ink is then worked into the grooves/marks and buffed away again from the surface before being passed through an etching press with damp paper! On Tuesday Laura will introduce collagraph printing which involves creating a collaged plate using recycled materials, this can then be inked in various ways and passed through the etching press to create an embossed print. In the afternoon she’ll introduce mono screen printing, this is a more painterly technique using water-based inks, you'll explore painting with coloured inks onto a screen to make various marks and can also try making hand cut stencils. On Wednesday Laura will be back to introduce you to relief printing, starting in the morning with lino cut - carving into the surface of a block and then rolling with ink to either print by hand or using one of our book presses. In the afternoon you can play with our collection of vintage wooden type and create posters or print over some of your prints from the previous sessions!
