Painterly Printmaking - 6 weeks

Service Description
For those who already paint or those who want to further explore painterly methods in print, this course will take an experimental approach to printmaking using 3 main processes - mono print, collagraph and mono screen printing. Mono printing involves inking a perspex or metal plate by either rolling over with a thin layer of ink and working into it or painting directly onto it. You can explore brushing, dabbing, wiping and scraping into the ink, much like on a canvas/board, but the plate is a much more wipeable surface giving endless possibilities to building up an image before passing it through the press to produce your print. Collagraph printing primarily involves using collaged materials to build a plate. Smooth textures will be more wipeable and stronger textures will hold more ink giving contrast and more consistency. You can ink the plate in various ways to make it more painterly and the textures used will also give an embossed result when passed through the press with dampened paper. The inking can be much like a mono print, but the plate itself builds in interest and holds residual ink, making each print a bit of a surprise! Mono screen printing is the most directly like painting and involves using water based inks that are brushed onto a silk screen, the ink is then squeegeed through the screen as a very thin layer giving an incredibly crisp, flat result. Screen prints can be layered up in stages and you can also use hand cut stencils to create more defined shapes to your composition. All basic materials will be supplied, including papers, inks, plates. Additional materials are available to buy as you go. This course counts as a full induction to the studio, after which you might be interested in becoming a member of Norwich Printmaking Hub and booking open access.
